Description:
The Design and Product:
Variable volume and collapsible resuscitator device for patient specific tidal volume delivery

The Opportunity:
This opportunity relates to ground level investment for a revolutionary first response resuscitation device (RESUS). This design, is fully protected in the form of a PCT and is due for National applications worldwide 16 June 2008.

Background:
Current resuscitators are often only suitable for highly experienced medical professionals, commonly require more than one person rescuer to operate effectively and only deliver one set tidal volume. Also most devices use a Bag Valve Mask which can deliver insufficient tidal volumes depending on a number of factors; the experience of the operator, hand size and fatigue. It has also been shown that even two handed use of Bag valve masks results in lower Tidal volume Delivery than accepted clinical guidelines.

Recent work has shown that a hand operated pump with a fixed volume can enable non-medically skilled individuals to adequately provide the required tidal volume. However the current device is bulky, and separate devices must be used for different patients. Thus there is a need for a portable, collapsible pump operated resuscitator device with variable volume so the one device can be used on many different adult, child and infant/baby patients.

The opportunity for collaboration includes;
• Become party to ownership of a new first response resuscitation technology (shares based)
• Manufacturing and sales globally
• 20 years of patent protection, thus investment protection
• The ability to share your knowledge as a mentor, with a young and ambitious entrepreneur

Research Objectives:
• Develop RESUS to IP licensing stage
• Prove the technology via prototype manufacture and testing
• Obtain FDA approval in the USA

Principal Methodologies:
• Develop RESUS in institutions (Canterbury/Otago/Auckland Universities in New Zealand or alternatively Australia)
• Utilise PhD, Masters students and university staff/commercial arms
• or; develop completely privately

Potential Health Outcomes or Impact:
• A new form of first response resuscitation device that is small enough to be carried in a glove box, a belt or military uniform for the use of ventilating a patient suffering respiratory distress or heart attack who is undergoing CPR.
• More persons surviving respiratory distress/heart attack due to a new device being available for the use of the general public and medical personnel

Objective(s):
The following objectives will be based on an already existing design which has an international PCT patent application. Importantly, the overall concept in this proposal has provisional backing from Dr Mark Anderson, the President of MAI/Genesis and Genesis Industries. This is one of the largest animal science field manufacturers and retailers in the States. Agreements are currently being developed; but unfortunately, a signed and sealed international collaboration with Dr Mark Anderson has not been completed.

Objective 1 (1-6 months): Design, build and validate on a dummy, a single 3 cup collapsible pump that can provide two consistent tidal volumes corresponding to an adult and child.

Objective 2 (7-12 months): Design, build and validate on a dummy, a 4,5 or 6 cup collapsible pump that can provide multiple tidal volumes for use on many different patients.

Objective 3 (13-18 months): Develop a multi-use face mask that folds out according to different patients.

Objective 4 (19-24 months): Complete rigorous testing on dummies, both adult and child, to establish long term durability and robustness of the ventilator. Develop protocols for initial clinical validation on animals.

Investment:
Investment at this early stage comprises AU$30,000 in order to progress National applications for patents in Australia, New Zealand and the USA. Investment thus far has been NZ$100,000

AMOUNT REQUESTED: $30,000
MINIMUM INVESTMENT AMOUNT: $10,000
INVESTMENT REASON: Research & Development
REGION: New South Wales
