Description:
My program will be devoted to advance the understanding of thermo-chemical pathways to convert cellulose and hemicelluloses into mono and oligo-sugars and in the fermentation of these sugars to produce ethanol in Washington State University,WA starting from 15th august 2008.
This project will be carried out under the supervision of Prof. Manuel Garcìa-Perez and Prof. Shulin Shen. The influence of cellulose crystalline structure, degree of polymerization, presence of catalysts (MgCl2 and CaCl2), heating rate and final temperature on the yield of mono and oligosugars will be studied by Py-GC/MS, TG/MS and by TG-HPLC. Bio-oils from several biomasses will be produced in a fast pyrolysis reactor. Several procedures to detoxify bio-oils will be investigated. The resulting detoxified oils will be hydrolysed with diluted acids to transform anhydrosugars to fermentable sugars. These sugars will be converted to ethanol using Escherichia coli FBR5 and Candida sp. XF 217 under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The sugar content and ethanol production will be followed by Ion chromatography.
